Claude Duet: The AI That Stops Waiting for You to Ask

Anthropic's Claude Duet is not a chatbot. It watches your connected apps, briefs you every morning and asks before it acts. What it means for Quebec SMBs, and the Law 25 question nobody is asking.

The agent's whole pitch in one image: the brief is ready before you sit down.

On October 21, Anthropic launched Claude Duet, and it is not another chatbot. Every AI tool you have used so far works the same way: you ask, it answers, you ask again. Duet flips that. It watches your connected apps, checks in during the day, and reaches out first when something needs your attention.

A chatbot waits. An agent works.

This is the distinction the whole industry is now built on, and it is worth stating plainly:

- A chatbot is reactive. It sits idle until you type. It has no idea what happened in your business this morning, and when the conversation ends, it stops.

- An agent is proactive. It is connected to your tools, it keeps working between conversations, and it comes to you when something needs a decision. You delegate outcomes, not just questions.

A chatbot answers "what is on my calendar today?" An agent has already read your calendar, noticed the conflict, and drafted the message to fix it. Same underlying AI. Completely different job.

Here is what that looks like in practice. Duet sends you a short brief every morning built from your email, your calendar and the other apps you connect. Through the day, it keeps an eye on those same sources and pings you only when something actually matters. You can also hand it work: schedule a meeting, build a dashboard, prepare a sales forecast, draft replies for your approval, even prototype a small web app. It runs in its own cloud computer with its own browser, so the work continues while your laptop is closed and your phone is off.

The detail that matters most: Duet asks before it acts on anything consequential. Sending a message, making a payment, signing a document, deleting a file. All of that stops for your explicit approval. That is not a nice extra. That is the difference between an agent you can trust with real work and a demo that goes sideways the first week.

Who it is for, and the catch

Anthropic built Duet for professionals and small business owners who track too many things at once. That is exactly the profile of most SMB owners I work with in Quebec.

Now the catch, and it is a real one. Duet is a research preview. Access is by waitlist, limited to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the United States. Team and Enterprise plans are not in yet. If your business is in Quebec, you cannot get it today, full stop. Its background checks also draw on your existing Claude plan limits, so heavy monitoring burns your allowance faster.

The Quebec angle nobody is talking about

A proactive agent only works if you connect it to your real business: your inbox, your calendar, your files. For a Quebec business, that immediately raises a Law 25 question. Where does that data go, who processes it, and how long is it kept? Duet runs on US infrastructure. Connecting it to client data without a privacy assessment is exactly the kind of shortcut that turns into a compliance problem later. Anthropic says Duet does not see your passwords and has safeguards against leaking sensitive data like card numbers and government IDs. Good. That is a starting point, not a substitute for your own homework.

The other half of the promise: the work continues while the office is empty.

What you should do with this news

Do not chase the waitlist. Do this instead:

1. Write down the follow-ups that eat your week. The invoices you chase, the emails you re-check three times, the meetings that need scheduling. That list is your agent shopping list, whatever tool you end up with.

2. Clean up your data habits now. An agent connected to a messy inbox and three versions of every file will just make mistakes faster. Structure first, automation second.

3. Decide your approval rules in advance. What can an agent do alone, what needs your OK first? Anthropic's model, approve before sending, paying, signing or deleting, is a solid default to copy.

The shift underneath this launch is bigger than one product. AI is moving from a tool you visit to a colleague that works between your conversations. The businesses that benefit will not be the ones with the fanciest agent. They will be the ones whose processes are clear enough to delegate.

That part, at least, you do not need a waitlist for.
