Mistral Large 4, Explained for a Business Owner

Mistral Large 4 is Mistral's biggest model yet, built in Europe, and it reads French like a native. Here is what changed, what it costs, and the one concrete action a business owner should take this week.

On October 6, 2026, the French company Mistral AI released its biggest model to date. The official name is Mistral Large 4. Their own nickname for it is le Chonk. It is big on purpose.

I spent the week reading the announcement and the tech press so you do not have to. Here is what a business owner actually needs to know. No jargon. No hype.

What it is

Mistral Large 4 is Mistral's new flagship AI model. It is their answer to the biggest American and Chinese models. It is natively multimodal. That means it reads text and images in the same model, not as two tools glued together. You can hand it a photo of a damaged shipment, a scanned invoice, or a screenshot of an error message. It reads them.

It is built for serious business work: coding, finance, document QnA, cybersecurity, and AI agents that use tools and call functions. The context window is one million tokens. That is roughly a full library shelf of documents in a single conversation.

What actually changed

Three things changed.

First, scale. The model holds about 1.05 trillion parameters. That is the total knowledge capacity. Only a small fraction of it works on each word, which is what keeps it fast. You will see precise figures quoted online about that active fraction. Mistral's own pages disagree on the number. Treat any exact figure with suspicion.

Second, price. On Mistral's API it lists at $1.36 per million input tokens and $4.18 per million output tokens. For the first two weeks of the preview it is 50 percent off: $0.68 in, $2.09 out. For context, a million tokens is about 750,000 English words. Reading a 50-page contract costs less than a coffee.

Third, openness. Mistral says the open weights arrive by the end of October 2026. That means a company could eventually download the model and run it on its own servers. No American cloud required. The licence terms are not public yet. Check them before you plan around that promise.

Why the European angle matters

European data centre corridor
Trained in Mistral's own European data centres, Large 4 is the continent's bid for AI sovereignty.

Mistral trained this model on 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in its own data centres in Europe. It supports more than 160 languages, including every official language of the European Union.

For a Quebec business, two things matter here. The first is French. A model built with Europe's languages in its core writes better French than most American models. If your business runs on French documents, that is not a detail. It is the difference between usable output and garbage.

The second is data sovereignty. Law 25 already forces Quebec businesses to think about where their data goes. A European open-weight model is a third option next to American cloud models and Chinese open models. It is built under stricter data rules than either. For regulated businesses, that option is worth watching.

Your one action this week

Hands holding a French invoice in front of a laptop
One French document, two tools, ten minutes. That is the whole test.

Take one real French document from your business. An invoice. A supplier quote. One page of a contract. Feed it to the AI tool you use today and ask it to extract the key facts in French. Then try the same document with Mistral Large 4 through Mistral's platform. Compare the French quality.

That is it. One document, two tools, ten minutes. You will learn more from that test than from any benchmark table.

Then ask your IT person or your AI provider one question. When the open weights drop at the end of October, could we run a model like this on our own servers? The answer tells you how independent your AI setup can become.

One thing to watch

The preview is new. Mistral says the final version ships with the weights, and the downloadable model may differ from today's preview. Do not rebuild your systems on a preview. Test it, price it, then wait for the final weights before making infrastructure decisions.
